Pay Attention!

I enjoyed the video Pay Attention, more than the similar Did You Know? Both accomplished their goal of getting the viewer to think about how prevalent technololgy is in or society today, and particularly in the lives of young people. But, "Pay Attention" cited references that will make it more credible among educators, including journal articles, and a reference to Blooms taxonomy.

It is worth noting that a student of Bloom's, Lori Anderson, has published a revised version of the taxonomy that fits nicely with the innovative capacities of technology use in education. The images included are from an Educational Software Blog that has some interesting ideas. They're such great artistic representations of a key educational theory! Also, Colette Cassinelli - author of edtechVision, a blog dedicated to visionary uses of educational technology, has an interesting discussion of a TechLearning magazine article by Andrew Churches that "connects how blogging, wikis, video and other participatory media are matched up with each of the updated Bloom’s taxonomy." Check it out!

Getting back to the video... In a recent meeting with faculty, the existence of generational differences among learners was debated by the group. This presentation will make an excellent supplement to this discussion. Faculty often comment that learners are not paying attention to traditional lectures and seminars. The student comment of "playing school" in the video seemed to address this issue. I'm curious to find out which statistics or statements resonate with the faculty I work with.

It's also important to remember that technology is a tool for educators to use in the most effective ways possible. We must be careful to utilzie the best learning tool for our learners, which may or may not include technology. As we continue to emphasize the importance of maintaining privacy, we must remember that technological records are permanent and lasting in ways the average learner may only somewhat understand. We must be mindful of this permance as we create assignments and requirements in this new modality.

  1. Susan,

You make some very good points about only using technology when it enhances learning. I think that is very important to keep in mind.

I found this wiki yesterday that is the result of a group of educators trying answer 4 questions. I think the questions themselves are worth having faculty discuss. Check out http://learningmatters.wikispaces.com/

  3. Susan,

I did not look at this video, but after hearing what you are saying about it, I'm going to go back and check it out. Bloom's Taxonomy is fundamental to what we do in the classroom and I'm definitely a fan (as you can probably tell from my blog).

Thanks for all the great information!
